SEVEN VARIETIES OF MOUNTAIN GROWN RICE FROM THE CORDILLERAS OF THE PHILIPPINES.
As photographer, with Olive as stylist and art director, we are so honored in being given the chance to do this project for Eighth Wonder Inc.
As I was in the process of getting familiar with the product, I read some articles written about the mountain tribes of the Cordilleras (Kalingas, Ifugaos, etc.) and the effort of the client (Eighth Wonder) to bring it to a wider market.
Never had grains of rice, which we consume everyday, got me into thinking... The people who continue to preserve this wonderful tradition of rice planting in the terraces of Northern Philippines can teach us a thing or two about relating to environment. The work they immerse themselves into - from keeping grain integrity, to planting, harvesting, pounding and winnowing tell us a lot about being true to the universe of nature which allows them to do what they do because they are in sync. That, plus the fact that they do it in the mountain sides where they hand crafted their terraces hundreds of years ago completes the scenario that is just simply amazing and full of wonder.
As a photographer, I can only attempt to measure up to the responsibility. I told Olive - this work has to be good -if only to give due respect and tribute to the people who brought forth these grains, and who touched us with such beauty and meaning.
I know - in the end, the photographs should simply be enticing enough so that we on the consumer end will be convinced to buy, try and consume. But even then, in so doing , we make ourselves part of this cycle which will return to nature what is nature's to begin with.
A cycle full of beauty, timeless tradition, painstaking work and unceasing wonders.
